There are a lot of reasons for a water dispenser in a refrigerator to stop working. Again, some of the reasons might sound a little strange. However, something as obvious as an off switch on the refrigerator has been the culprit in the past. Be sure to inspect the more obvious potential problems prior to moving forward with refrigerator repair. Let’s start to cover this appliance repair issue and see all of the reasons we can come up with for a broken water dispenser.

The cause of a broken water dispenser is typically an installation issue, a filter problem or frozen water tubes:

New Refrigerator Installation Problems

You just installed a new refrigerator for your kitchen with a water dispenser, but it is broken. The water dispenser has to be connected to the home’s water line. That could be the cause of the issue.

If your new refrigerator is replacing an older refrigerator that didn’t include a water dispenser or ice maker, there is a possibility that you don’t have a water line near this area. A water line is usually run from under a home either in a crawl space or basement. You can purchase this type of water line at nearly any home repair store and they are very easy for even the average homeowner to install. Typically they have a a water shut-off valve, which is important so that if you should need to relocate the refrigerator, you can shut off the water.

If there’s an attached water line, is the valve on? The valve handle needs to be lined up with the hose. And, is water going through the pipe you have installed to connect the water line? Obvious and basic questions, but things that have to be accounted for.

If you had to remove the doors during installation the water dispenser might not be plugged in. Check the manual to see the wire harness for the particular model of refrigerator. Be sure that it is plugged into the refrigerator.

If the water is connected, most of the time there is air in it. So, engaging and disengaging the dispenser lever to get the air out of it is needed.
Filter Issues

On some of the popular models, there are various filters. These filters can “expire”, clog or become frozen. All of the filters are based on the model and type of refrigerator. If the filter is clogged it might cause slow filling or no flowing. It is suggested that your filter should be replaced every 6 months. Changing filters can be hard sometimes. If you run into problems, go online or call us and find the right method to replace a filter.

One recommendation is to fill up the filter with water prior to installation. A lot of time the water filters need a long time to fill, which could cause you to believe the water dispenser isn’t working. You will want to read the directions if nothing is working. To ensure it is not air trapped in the lines, we recommend to depress the dispenser arm for around 5 minutes.

A frozen water tank could be the source of the problem as well in some refrigerators. If the water tank freezes it will start to leak onto the food bins. Low amounts of food inside of the fresh food bins could cause freezing to happen.
